Some interesting facts about New Zealand:
Did you know that New Zealand has five times more sheep than people?
The New Zealand flag features the Union Jack and the Southern Cross on a blue background. The Union Jack evokes membership of the Commonwealth and its unwavering attachment to the United Kingdom. The Southern Cross is a constellation visible from the southern hemisphere. It therefore perfectly symbolizes New Zealand, one of the southernmost countries in the world.
It was in the Waikato region that Peter Jackson brought Hobbiton, the hobbit village from The Lord of the Rings, to life. The site has been preserved and is now open to visitors. You will discover the small village of Bilbo and Frodo, as imagined by J. R. R. Tolkien.
The Maori arrived in New Zealand in successive waves between the 9th and 14th centuries. They developed a unique culture on site, the most famous art form of which remains tattooing. Traditional dances have been passed down to us, particularly thanks to the famous hakka performed by the New Zealand rugby team before matches. Fierce warriors, the Maori long resisted English colonization. Their legacy was quickly recognized in New Zealand. Today, they represent approximately 17% of the country’s population.
