To discover
Yekaterinburg is the third largest city in Russia and one of the most dynamic ones. It is located on the eastern slopes of the Ural Mountains (a 2 hour flight east from Moscow) which represent a natural border between Europe and Asia.
Many people call Yekaterinburg “the city of young people” because of the vibrant student life and the many possibilities that this growing city offers.
The city has several dozen libraries, including the V. G. Belinsky Scientific Library, which is the largest public library in Sverdlovsk.
Yekaterinburg is one of the centers of Russian rock music and has many famous Russian bands. A wide variety of concerts by local and guest bands take place in clubs, pubs and cafes in Yekaterinburg.
There are a large number of sports complexes and fitness centers, as well as possibilities for outdoor sports. Some university sports activities (rock-n-roll dancing, climbing, basketball, volleyball, aerobics, hiking, etc.) can be done for free.
The nature of the Urals is impressive and the excursions are numerous. In winter, you can go skating, skiing and snowboarding in the many ski resorts not far from the city.
Good to know
It can get very cold in February and March, on average -5 to -10 ° C in February, and a few days with extreme temperatures of -20 or -30 ° C are common. The city will likely be snow-capped when you arrive and the last snowfall may occur in early May. Make sure to get yourself ready for the cold. But the buildings are all very (too) well heated.
The university can organize an airport pick-up service if you communicate your arrival date at least 3 working days earlier. More info :https://urfu.ru/en/international/information-for-prospective-international-students/first-steps-in-ekaterinburg/
It is recommended to plan at least RUB 20,000 per month in Yekaterinburg if you are staying in the dormitory.
