To discover
Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, is located in south-eastern Poland, close to the Czech and German borders, after a turbulent history spanning six centuries.
The country’s fourth largest city (population 637,000) enjoys a slightly milder climate than other Polish cities, especially in winter.
Today, Wroclaw is a true European metropolis, whose atmosphere allows its inhabitants to enjoy every day. With its beautiful architecture, historic parks and numerous cultural centres, Wroclaw attracts not only many tourists every year, but also crowds of creators and consumers of culture.
Founded around the 9th century, the city developed around the River Oder and its tributaries. These waterways have partly formed the 12 islands that make up the city. Add to that miles of canals and more than 110 bridges and footbridges, which have earned it the nickname “the Polish Venice.”
Rynek – the Old Town Market Square offers a perfect blend of historic buildings, originally Gothic in style, later remodeled in Renaissance, Baroque, or Classical styles, and those rebuilt after the war. One of the largest squares in Europe, it is also one of the most beautiful. The Four Denominations neighborhood, also known as the Mutual Respect neighborhood or the Four Temples neighborhood, is well worth a visit. Built of reinforced concrete, the Centennial Hall (Hala Stulecia) is a revolutionary work in the history of world architecture. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, it is the pride of the city’s inhabitants.
As you walk along, you will come across strange miniature statues. These Krasnale have been watching over the city since the commemoration of the anarchist movement “Alternative Orange” in 2001. Today, hunting goblins has become a full-time occupation. More than 350 bronze figurines have found a home in the city, some more hidden than others.
Wroclaw is known for its culinary specialties, but you can’t leave the city without trying the gingerbread. The tradition of gingerbread baking in Silesia dates back to the 13th century.
