To discover
After six centuries of turbulent history, Wroclaw, the capital of Lower Silesia, is located in south-east Poland, close to the Czech and German borders.
The country’s fourth-largest city (population 637,000) enjoys a slightly milder climate than other Polish cities, particularly in winter.
Today, Wroclaw is a true European metropolis, with an atmosphere that allows its inhabitants to enjoy every day. With its beautiful architecture, historic parks and numerous cultural centres, Wroclaw attracts not only many tourists every year, but also crowds of creative people and consumers of culture. Founded around the 9th century, the city developed around the river Oder and its tributaries. These waterways in part formed the 12 islands that make up the city. Add to this miles of canals and more than 110 bridges and footbridges, and you have the nickname of the ‘Polish Venice’.
Rynek – the Old Town’s Market Square offers a perfect blend of historic buildings, originally Gothic, later remodelled in Renaissance, Baroque or Classical styles, and those rebuilt after the war. One of the largest squares in Europe, it is also one of the most beautiful.
The Four Denominations district, also known as the Mutual Respect district or the Four Temples district, is well worth a visit.Built in reinforced concrete, the Centenary Hall (Hala Stulecia) is a revolutionary work in the history of world architecture. Inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2006, it is the pride of the city’s inhabitants.
As you walk along, you’ll come across some strange miniature statues. These Krasnale have watched over the town since the commemoration of the “Alternative Orange” anarchist movement in 2001.
Today, leprechaun hunting has become an occupation in its own right. More than 350 bronze figures have taken up residence in the city, some more hidden than others.
Wroclaw is famous for its culinary specialties, but it’s impossible to leave the city without tasting its gingerbread. The tradition of making gingerbread in Silesia dates back to the 13th century.
