To discover
Vila do Conde is a Portuguese town in the Porto district.
Located on the north bank of the Rio Ave, Vila do Conde is an important industrial center, fishing port and seaside and tourist resort, with one of the country’s main and most popular seaside resorts. The town is part of the same urban agglomeration as Póvoa de Varzim.
A satellite town of Porto, Vila do Conde is a beautiful town that’s not very well known yet. A peaceful atmosphere prevails.
The town boasts a rich historical heritage, including the imposing Santa Clara convent, built in the early 14th century and still dominating the cityscape today. Other highlights include the 16th-century Church of St. John the Baptist, the Vila do Conde castle and the Santa-Clara aqueduct: no fewer than 999 arches stretching over 4 kilometers were built between 1705 and 1714, making this the second-largest aqueduct in the country. The aqueduct is impressive and can be seen from the center of Vila do Conde. It begins at the Convent of Santa Clara, from which it takes its name, and was once used to supply the convent with water. Many of the arches are still perfectly intact.
The cobbled historic center offers a stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist trade. The town is full of charm, with its colorful houses and great places to eat fresh grilled fish by the water.
Good to know
Vila Conde Beach stretches for almost 6 kilometers to the mouth of the Ave River, almost without interruption. In this area, which takes on different names depending on the concession holders and regulars, there are beaches such as Caxinas, used by fishermen, Turismo Beach, which is very popular due to its proximity to the city center, and Blue Beach, the most sought-after beach for surfers.
Vila do Conde is also known for its beautiful bobbin lace, made with great skill and patience by local women.
