Hanyang University Erica
Strengths
Hanyang University is a private university in South Korea. It has two main campuses, the first in Seongdong-gu (in central Seoul) and the second, known as the Erica campus, in Ansan. The story of Hanyang began in 1939, when Kim Lyun-jun, a doctor of literature, founded the country’s first engineering school. Two decades later, this school became a multidisciplinary university, Hanyang. The ERICA Campus, where you will be staying, is famous for its cluster programme. If we take the initials of this programme: Education Research Industry Cluster Ansan, we find the name ERICA. The main idea of the programme is to develop knowledge and practical skills that can be used immediately after employment.
Major, Academics
Exchange students are allowed to take courses in different departments depending on availability. The most recent list of courses is available one month before the start of the semester. Until then, students should refer to the previous year’s course list.
Please note, however, that the list of courses may vary from year to year. The list of courses taught in English in the previous year can be consulted by clicking on the following link: https://bit.ly/3TpzL6N

Two types of Korean language course are offered to exchange students. The ‘survival’ Korean course is taught exclusively by the Institute of International Education (IIE), with tuition fees fully covered by the Office of International Affairs (OIA). The ‘intensive’ Korean course is open to all students, not just exchange students, and requires payment of tuition fees.
Campus
The ERICA campus is located around 40 km south of Seoul.
The ERICA campus is located around 40 km south of Seoul. There are 9 colleges and 42 departments on the ERICA campus. There are 3 entrances to the campus (Main Gate, East Gate and West Gate).
Every semester, a festival is organised on campus: for several days, many Korean artists and singers come to give concerts in Ansan.
Buddies are current Hanyang students who volunteer to help new students settle in and adapt smoothly to life in Korea. As cultural representatives, the buddies interact with the new exchange or visiting students throughout the semester and provide assistance in a variety of areas.
To discover
Ansan is located in the Seoul metropolitan area on the shores of the Yellow Sea.
It is linked to Seoul by line 4 of the Seoul Metro.
Ansan is South Korea’s largest entrepreneurial city, home to more than 10,000 small and medium-sized enterprises. Ansan’s Science Valley, like the American ‘Silicon Valley’, is playing a key role for businesses in the fourth industrial revolution.
Home to the Lake Sihwa tidal power plant, the largest of its kind in the world, Ansan is pioneering renewable energy policies while positioning itself as an environmentally friendly city with the highest ratio of urban green spaces in South Korea, the most notable examples being Lake Sihwa, Daebudo Island and Ansan Marshland Park.
Above all, Ansan’s main characteristic and greatest pride is its cosmopolitan fabric. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the country and is commonly referred to as the “little global village”. Foreigners account for 13% of its total population.
Ansan respects the human rights of people of foreign origin, diversity and cultural differences, and implements leading policies to promote harmonious coexistence between Koreans and new arrivals.
We recommend a visit to the Seong Ho Cultural Festival (in homage to the scholar Seongho Yi-Ik).
The Byolmangsung fortress and the Danwon arts festival, named in honour of the Danwon painter who came from this town.
Good to know
The symbols of the university are:
− Forsythia: a shrub that doesn’t care where it plants its roots, whether in sandy, watery or fertile soil, because it can rest peacefully and be content anywhere. It is therefore the flower that best corresponds to the spirit of “love in deed and truth”.
− The lion: a dignified and courageous animal, but one that doesn’t resort to force. He does not kill animals when it is not necessary, which proves that true courage is closely linked to tolerance. It represents people who are eligible and qualified for great work, and symbolises the courageous Hanyangians who are trying to open up their own world.
− The dove: a traditional symbol of love and order. This bird hates war and does not try to dominate others by force. Doves are more powerful and adaptable than eagles. The dove symbolises the pure dignity of the Hanyangians and will be the school’s best bird for realising its founding philosophy of “love in deed and truth”.
