To discover
Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon, was the capital of Vietnam, a title which was left to Hanoi ever since. Nowadays considered as the economical heart of the country, Ho Chi Minh is a large city that can often be chaotic and noisy. Here are the things and places to see in Ho Chi Minh:
- Visit the most beautiful pagodas and temples and head to the district of Cholon
- Drink the famous iced coffee, locally known as “ca phé sua da”. It is prepared with full-bodied black coffee and filtered dropwise by a “ca phe phin”, a metal filter (French style). It is served with sweetened condensed milk and ice cream.
- Discover the Mekong Delta, also known as Vietnam’s “rice bowl”. It is a floating labyrinth of 39,000 km². You will need a four hour drive -more or less- from Ho Chi Minh to reach another world where markets, villages and schools float over sprawling estuaries.
- Notre Dame Cathedral, built by the French during the 19th century, and the central Gothic-style post office, open since 1886. Inside, the metal structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel.
Good to know
Ho Chi Minh being the most populous city, its streets are always full of motorbikes. There aren’t actual traffic rules and you may have a hard time crossing a street if you are shy and hesitant. Don’t be afraid, just be determined and take the first step.
Ho Chi Minh is part of the top 10 cities for street food. Here you will only eat for only few dongs. Pho soup is the national dish and you can find it everywhere in the streets for less than one euro. If you are looking for something heavier, head to Bến Thành Market, where you can also find some great deals on fabrics and trinkets.
