To discover
Vilnius, the capital and largest city in Lithuania. Relatively small and welcoming, with a population of less than a million, Vilnius is Lithuania’s most international city and the second youngest (after Copenhagen) in the Nordic European countries. In 2019, Vilnius made the list of the top 100 student cities, taking into account university rankings, student mix, desirability, employer activity and affordability.
Here, history and modernity meet. The medieval Old Town of Vilnius is famous for its Baroque and Gothic architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vilnius also has plenty of modern sights to discover.
Throughout the year, the capital hosts numerous cultural events, such as the Vilnius International Film Festival, Capital Days, the Vilnius Jazz Festival and Culture Night. What’s more, it’s a wonderful place from which to explore the Baltic States.
Good to know
Nicknamed “the city of a hundred churches”, Vilnius now has 44 of the 200 churches it once had, including 28 in the Old Town. Some of them have become places of pilgrimage for Catholics and Orthodox, Poles and Lithuanians, and are home to a veritable melting pot of communities that participate in and contribute to the maintenance of these places of prayer and to the local economy, both religious and atheist.
A curiosity: Užupis, an alternative, libertarian artists’ quarter with a number of cafés, which has become a “self-proclaimed republic”.
What's going on?
The number of places in Erasmus + is limited. The granting of the scholarship is therefore not automatic and the amount may vary. However, we invite you to apply because exchange places (excluding Erasmus +) may be offered. Please refer to the Erasmus+ section.
