Campus
For more than 55 years, the Faculty has been located in the centre of the old town, near the Aleksotas Bridge (also known as Vytautas Magnus). The university’s buildings are characterised by medieval architecture in the intimate courtyards, vaulted rooms and wood-panelled classrooms.
On campus you will find a health and sports centre which offers various health and sports events as well as fitness and sports rooms for the university community. In addition, high-level sports teams train here and competitions, as well as various tournaments between students and faculty staff, are organised.
The Cultural Centre of Vilnius University includes 11 artistic groups. Fans of folklore, choral singing and theatre are also invited to join three artistic groups from the Vilnius University faculty in Kaunas.
On campus you will also find a botanical garden, a planetarium and one of the most beautiful libraries in Europe.
To discover
Kaunas is the second largest city in Lithuania, with 340,000 inhabitants. The city of Kaunas is located 100 km from Vilnius, easily reached by train.
Kaunas is a young and growing city. The largest river port in the Baltic States, on the Neman River, it is now home to several universities, research centres, as well as cultural centres and major artistic events, including the Kaunas Jazz Festival. With its basketball club, Kaunas is well known among European sportsmen.
The Freedom Street is the longest pedestrian street in Kaunas and probably the longest in Europe. Pines used to grow here and there was… a swamp! Nowadays, Freedom Street is one of the most popular places for walking and entertainment in Kaunas. Lined with trees and rather restored colourful buildings with shops, cafes and restaurants, it leads to Vilniaus Street, the main street of the old town, with old colourful houses and large cobblestones. This is the city’s liveliest street, with terraces overflowing!
Also worth a visit are the former presidential palace and Kaunas Cathedral, which is as sober on the outside as it is elaborate on the inside. Continuing on, we reach the main square of the town, the square of the old town hall and the old market..
