The University of Cyprus was established in 1989 and admitted its first students in 1992. It was founded in response to the growing intellectual needs of the Cypriot people. Despite its short history, the University of Cyprus has earned the respect of the international academic community and the appreciation of Cypriot society. The University of Cyprus aims to establish itself as a pioneering research institution achieving international scientific recognition in European higher education, offering competitive programmes and becoming a centre of excellence in the wider Euro-Mediterranean region.

Campus
The university is located on the eastern outskirts of Nicosia, between Aglantzia and Athalassa, and covers an area of about 1.2 square kilometers.
The library is an integral part of student life and plays an important role in the learning and research activities of the University community. The impressive building covers an area of 15,700 square meters and houses 1 million printed volumes, more than 30,000 electronic titles and 150 databases. It also offers about 900 seats equipped with the latest technology. The UCY Athletic Center, located on the main campus, includes modern sports fields and gyms accessible to all students (an outdoor football field, 3 outdoor tennis courts, an outdoor handball court, 2 outdoor futsal courts, 2 outdoor basketball/volleyball courts, a beach volleyball court).
Also located on the main campus is the Social Facilities Center which plays a central role in recreation, socializing, and supporting the student community. The complex is composed of seven buildings organized around a public square and encompasses various indoor and outdoor spaces.. A variety of services are offered: restaurants, cafes, pub, mini market, bookshop/copy center, various banks, ATMs, etc.

Cyprus is an island in the Mediterranean sea, which has the distinction of being divided into two parts. To the south, the Republic of Cyprus constitutes the Greek half of the island. In the north, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is not recognized by the ONU. In the middle, the “green line” defines a buffer zone that crosses the country and cuts the capital of Nicosia in two.
Two contrasting universes, but united by their history and now connected by a checkpoint. You have to visit it!
Over the past twenty years, relations between the two areas of the island have calmed down and it is possible to move from one to the other without difficulty. You will enjoy all the charms of Nicosia, the Mediterranean influence in the south, the architectural beauties in the north.
Bounded by an enclosure of ramparts dating from the Venetian occupation, the city center of Nicosia forms the most authentic place in the city. Picturesque alleys await you, in which old houses and charming restaurants follow one another. You will also find souvenir shops offering lace and statuettes of Aphrodite.
During your walk, let yourself be seduced by the waiters who offer you a free glass of Ouzo and sit on the terrace. Sample local delicacies like spinach pie at a feast of mezze.
Good to know
Despite the many invasions suffered during its history, Cyprus is above all an independent republic that has kept the best of each of its successive occupants. The Cypriot is Mediterranean without being Latin, Greek speaking without being Greek, drives on the left without being British, shares the Orthodox confession without being Russian, drinks coffee with grounds at the bottom of the cup without being Turkish and, above all, is very proud of his country.
Some practical tips on site:
-Make sure you dress properly outside the beaches, especially near places of worship. Wear trousers and cover your shoulders if visiting a monastery (some are forbidden to women);
-Never refuse an ouzo, a coffee or a glass of water, it would be perceived as an affront or a sign of rudeness. Don’t be surprised if a shopkeeper invites you to sit down, or even grab a lemonade or a cup of coffee, as it’s a way to do business. If you are offered coffee, it is rude to bid farewell to your host before the cup has cooled.

Accommodation
The number of rooms available is limited. Accommodation requests are processed on a first-come, first-served basis if the number of requests exceeds the number of rooms available. The deadline for receive the housing applications is mid-June for the fall semester and mid-November for the spring semester.
