Strengths
The University of Sarajevo is the main institution of higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the best universities in the region. Until 1975, the University of Sarajevo was the only university in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Since its establishment, the University of Sarajevo has been oriented towards international cooperation, building bridges between cultures and establishing partnerships around the world.
It is EPAS and AACSB accredited.

Campus
The campus of the University of Sarajevo is located on the site that once belonged to the Maršal Tito military barracks.
At the end of World War II, the complex was named after Maršal Josip Broz “Tito” and his statue, made by the famous Croatian sculptor, Antun Augustinčić, was placed in front of the barracks and still exists today.
After the last war, a large part of the land was made available to the University of Sarajevo. Today it houses the National and University Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Oriental Institute and several laboratories.

The city is famous for its traditional religious diversity, with Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism being present here for centuries. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are Bosnians, Croats, Serbs and 17 different national minorities. This has given it the nickname of “European Jerusalem”.
The mix is also reflected in the architecture. The city of Sarajevo belonged to the Ottoman Empire for four centuries, then to the Austro-Hungarian Empire for forty years. The inhabitants remember that the Austro-Hungarians made more progress in the city in forty years than the Ottomans did in four hundred years: wide streets, beautiful buildings, electricity, the tramway…
The entrance to the Turkish quarter is spectacular. You suddenly think you are in the Middle East. The main roads are replaced by small cobbled streets, whose stalls sell carpets and Aladdin lamps.
This is where you will find the most beautiful mosques, as well as the Sebilj square with its pigeons and its wooden fountain, one of the symbols of Sarajevo.
Sarajevo was built along a small shallow river, a nice walk is recommended.
There is the “Latin Bridge”, which is best known for having seen the assassination of Prince Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the trigger for the First World War.
About ten kilometers west of downtown Sarajevo is the source of the Bosna River. A beautiful park has been laid out with many water features.
The coffee (Turkish) is an institution in the country. This coffee is served unfiltered, so be sure to stop before swallowing the grounds!
Good to know
Sarajevo (and Bosnia-Herzegovina) is ranked as a moderately expensive city compared to the rest of Europe, but don’t expect Western European costs. If you like to go out, meet people, you will surely like Sarajevo and the life compared to France is less expensive.
The local currency is the convertible mark (BAM or KM).

Accommodation
The University of Sarajevo offers you two accommodation options in private dormitories or in private apartments.
Consider about 150 – 250 EUR/month depending on the location of your accommodation (the closer it is to the center of Sarajevo, the more expensive it is). Make sure your accommodation is close to public transportation.
